Federico Andreoni, Music Director & Organist

Federico Andreoni earned organ and piano diplomas at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan, and was awarded the Premier Prix de Virtuosité and the Prix Spécial Otto Barblan in the organ class of Lionel Rogg at The Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Geneva. He continued his graduate education in organ (M.Mus.) with William Porter at McGill University and in music theory (PhD) with Don McLean at the University of Toronto. He was awarded the High Distinction in organ (McGill), the Salsinger Tani Gold Medal in music performance (McGill), The Olympia Garibaldi-Galavaris Prize ‘for excellence in early music research’ (McGill), and The Jeanne Anson-Cartwright Memorial Fellowship in music theory (University of Toronto). Parallel to his musical studies, Federico pursued undergraduate training in psychology (B.A.) and is completing his graduate studies in neuroscience (M.Sc.-Ph.D.) at McGill University

Federico has played organ recitals in Europe and North America; performed multiple times the complete organ works of J. S. Bach, D. Buxtehude, J. Alain, and F. Mendelssohn; played for the Italian premiere of Voices (for voice, didgeridoo, and organ) by Philip Glass; improvised for The Montreal Jazz Festival; transcribed for and performed movie soundtracks during the 2016 Montreal Symphony Orchestra concert season; and, most recently, appeared as a musician in the 2019 remake of the acclaimed Canadian television series Street Legal.

An active composer, Federico’s compositions have been performed during National Conventions of The American Guild of Organists, The EROI Festival (Eastman School of Music), the concert season of The Symphonisches Orchester Zürich, the organ series of Exeter College at Oxford University, the international festival of the Pauluskirche in Darmstadt, and The Santa Rita International Organ Festival in Torino.

Currently, Federico is Director of Music of The Church of St. John the Evangelist in Montreal, and is a clinical researcher in the department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at The Montreal Neurological Institute (The Neuro).

In 2013 he was awarded the medal and honorary membership of The Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem for his ‘service to the community’, as the co-organizer and coordinator of numerous charity initiatives in Montreal.

The Choir

Since its founding in 1861, the parish of St. John the Evangelist has been faithful to the Catholic Tradition of the Anglican Church, as expressed in the Prayer Book and the English Use arising from the Medieval Sarum Liturgy. Music is an important part of this tradition.

St. John’s prides itself with on a long-standing tradition of great choral music. Its choir, which was originally composed of men and boys, is currently an adult mixed ensemble of professional musicians and talented undergraduate and graduate students in music and other disciplines.

The choir is responsible for the music at over 85 Services throughout the year, including monthly Evensongs and festal weekday Masses. It specializes in 16th and 17th Century sacred polyphony, 19th and 20th Century Anglican repertoire, and plainsong.
