Our generous, unflappable rector

In parish ministry, things can – and do – go sideways, usually suddenly and often in rather spectacular ways. And in the midst of Mass, to add to the “fun”. Over the more than three decades since his ordination, Fr. Keith has acquired the gift of receptivity to the wise counsel of the Holy Spirit during such disasters. He maintains a calm, non-anxious presence, as the saying goes, is able to smile, laugh and carry on.

When I pitched up at St John’s, on my first vacation after being ordained and taking charge of an eight-point rural parish in la Gaspésie, Fr. Keith greeted me warmly. On learning that I was Anglo-Catholic, he lost no time in putting me to work. During subsequent summer visits, I was given the opportunity to serve as Priest and Deacon at High Mass, benefiting from expert training by the late Peter Harper.

On moving to Montreal and joining our team of honorary assistants, I discovered the full scope of his generosity and hospitality. I am grateful for the liturgical, pastoral and educational opportunities given me under the Red Roof, and for the evenings spent at his home, enjoying fine food and excellent company. As well, the many cat-themed gifts Father gave me are a source of delight.

I wish my dear friend every blessing in this new stage of his life, and years of good health and happiness with his beloved partner Myer and their cat Sophie.
